Common Core: an update

Ohio Tea Party Patriots Co-cordinator Marianne Gasieki is sharing a Richland County success story and seeking participation in a statewide survey:

Passing a Resolution with an Unwilling School Board
Raising a Unified Voice
As some of you are aware, Marianne was elected to the Ontario School Board November 2013:
I was elected due to my vocal opposition to Common Core, as I had been attending meetings and questioning the board regarding Common Core for over a year.
Unfortunately, unlike the Garaway school district, the Ontario school district did not have a Board unified in their opposition to Common Core, so it was necessary to create a ground swell from concerned parents.
As a Board member, I couldn't be seen as actively involved in the movement, but was able to find a few key people who made it happen.
A petition was created, and within a matter of weeks, over 300 signatures were obtained.  These people took the petitions to soccer games, parent teacher conferences, anywhere there would be community gatherings. Click Here for a Copy of the Petition.
Copies of the petitions were sent to each Board member with a cover letter. Click Here to Read the Cover Letter.
At the December board meeting, our resolution opposing Common Core was passed.
It is important to note that although it looks like we were able to do this quickly, it took the action of parents coming to board meetings over multiple months, and clearly stating their issue with CC.  It took people working in the community, writing letters to the editor, posting yard signs around the school and educating their neighbors.  But it can be done!
If you would like to share your success story, please forward it to me and I will try to compile them so they accompany the survey results.

If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to contact Marianne at the Mansfield Tea Party at mansfieldteaparty@gmail.com.
These resolutions and efforts are important, especially since Gov. John Kasich is opposing repeal of CC. Read the latest from The Blaze here

Gov Kasich needs some wake-up Tweets to Repeal Common Core

Art credit: ownedit.com

From the Columbus Dispatch (h/t Marianne, Mansfield Tea Party) :

Gov. John Kasich doesn’t expect to see a Common Core elimination bill land on his desk.
In a meeting yesterday with the Dispatch editorial board, Kasich was asked about the effort by some Republican legislative leaders to repeal the Common Core education standards for math and English/language arts, along with Ohio’s other standards and tests.
“I don’t know that there’s any effort to repeal Common Core,” he said. “There may be an effort to talk about it.”
Kasich has said he supports the Common Core standards, adopted by Ohio and more than 40 other states in 2010 after they were developed by the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers as a way to boost college and career readiness among U.S. students.
“I wish we could just change the name to Ohio’s standards, or whatever,” Kasich said.
The curriculum to meet the standards is developed by local school officials, Kasich said, and parents can advise school boards.
“Until somebody can show me we’re eroding local control, I see no reason to do anything. And I don’t think they’re (the House) going to do anything, to tell you the truth,” Kasich said. “In my judgment, it isn’t going to get to me, and if it does, it isn’t going to look anything like it is."
This is our Governor, the man who is more interested in the wants of his financial backers than the pleas of his constituents, pleas of concerned parents and teachers from both sides of the aisle.  This is the man who wants your vote.
The level of arrogance and ignorance displayed in Governor Kasich's response is outrageous and downright offensive.

Don't Tweet?  Call or Email

Call the Governor at (614) 466-3555 or email at http://governor.ohio.gov/
Let him know that his arrogance and unwillingness to listen to the people, and his deliberate interference in the due process of the law is unacceptable.

Second hearing to repeal Common Core "standards" in Ohio

From Ohio Tea Party Co-cordinator Marianne:

The second hearing for HB 237, the bill to repeal Common Core, has been scheduled.

WHEN:    November 20th
                5:00 p.m. (tentatively)
WHERE:  Room 313 (same as last hearing)
The Atrium has been requested as the overflow room.

When visiting Richland County, Rep. Thompson stated that he believed one of the reasons he is receiving a second hearing is because of the strong show of support for this bill at the first hearing.

We must show that support again, and more if possible.
