New EPA Regulations Cause Power Plant Shut Downs in Ohio

Continuing to use the Clean Air Act as the Hammer (the Clean Water Act is the Sickle) the goose-stepping green energy goons at the EPA have imposed new regulations for coal-fired power plants. Not stopping until they have the country running around in loin clothes and rubbing sticks together for heat, these new EPA mandates will increase the costs of electricity from 10% - 35% and put over 600 people out of work.

With these new "air cleaner than God ever intended" regulations under the Clean Air Act's, Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act for Coal-Fired Power Plants, American Electric Power (AEP) is having to spend billions of dollars to come into compliance and will shut down or down size five coal-fired power plants, three of them in Ohio....

Congressman Bob Latta (R-Bowling Green) issued the following statement after Columbus-based American Electric Power (AEP) announced Thursday it would close and downsize three plants in Ohio at a loss of 157 jobs, to comply with the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) new coal-fire plant regulations:

“This is a perfect example of the EPA’s assault on American business and the economy.  The cost of complying with burdensome regulations will cause higher electricity bills and fewer jobs in America. Time and time again, I, along with other members of the Energy and Commerce Committee, have said that overreaching regulations and stringent timetables for compliance are a deterrent to job growth and energy stability.

“The EPA must come to terms with the fact that their overly broad one-size-fits-all regulations hurt companies. The EPA should setup a mechanism by which states can apply for regulatory waivers, giving states the flexibility to determine their business and environmental priorities.”

AEP expects EPA regulations to cause a net loss of approximately 600 power plant jobs with annual wages totaling approximately $40 million.

FCC Chief says "Fairness Doctrine is Unconstitutional"

The Federal Communications Commission has come to the correct conclusion that the free-speech squelching Fairness Doctrine is unconstitutional....

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.), a leading Senate conservative who has long fought against the Fairness Doctrine, today made the following comment after the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) agreed to strike the controversial regulation. 

Inhofe said, “I am pleased that FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski has formally acknowledged what we have long known to be the case -  that the Fairness Doctrine is unconstitutional and should be eliminated from the Code of Federal Regulations.  Over the past several years we have seen effort after effort by the radical left to limit free speech in this country through the regulation of the airwaves.  Such efforts not only threaten First Amendment rights, but also overly burden businesses in a manner that stifles job creation, investment and growth.  I suspect we have not seen the last of such efforts, but I am pleased with today’s announcement, and will continue to fight against the regulation of free speech.”

Tea Party Patriots Adopt-a-School Program

“….in Order to form a more perfect Union,….”

 Written 223 years ago, those words changed the course of history, establishing the freedoms and rights Americans enjoy today. Yet, many of our schools have ignored teaching the meaning and significance of our nation’s founding documents. For this reason, Ohio Tea Patriot groups are launching an initiative to bring awareness to Constitution Day/Week, which begins September 17th, among parents, teachers and school districts.

Did you know?

Schools that receive federal funds MUST teach the Constitution.

In 2004, Congress passed the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2005 into Public Law 108-447. Section 111 of that law mandates that "each educational institution that receives federal funds for a fiscal year shall hold an educational program on the United States Constitution on September 17 of such year for the students….”  This joint resolution designated September 17th as “Constitution/Citizenship Day” and the week beginning September 17th and ending September 23rd of each year as “Constitution Week.”

Patriots across the country are concerned that students in the public schools are not being taught about our founding documents. Tea Party Patriots are mounting a national campaign for 2011 Constitution Week to pressure our public schools to comply with a law passed by Congress in 2004 requiring an educational program on the Constitution be taught in all public schools during Constitution Week (September 17-23).

Here is How it Works in Three Easy Steps:

1. “Adopt a School”
2. Send a series of 3 letters to the school board, superintendent, and/or principal, and local media in your community. One letter will be sent in May 2011, one in August, and one in September. DId Chrysler "Really" repay their TARP Loan?

Using Obama math (48 States + 2 States = 57 States), the Treasury Department is claiming Chrysler has repaid their TARP loans....

Earlier this week, the Treasury Department announced Chrysler had repaid its outstanding Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) loans.  According to this announcement, the Treasury Department paid a total of $12.5 billion to Chrysler – yet only received $10.6 back.  So let’s do the math:

$12.5B Loan
-$10.6B Repayment
$1.9B Still Outstanding

Is this what the Treasury Department considers repayment of a loan?  I was always under the impression that it involved paying the entire loan off – not just a portion of it.

Further down the announcement, comes the truth hidden amongst the rhetoric lauding this early ‘repayment.’ 

“Treasury continues to hold a 6.6 percent common equity stake in Chrysler. As previously stated, however, Treasury is unlikely to fully recover its remaining outstanding investment of $1.9 billion in Chrysler.”

So what they really should have announced was that Chrysler repaid some of its loans and the federal government decided to excuse almost $2 billion in outstanding loans in exchange for continuing to own a portion of the company.  I, for one, am appalled at this announcement.  Not only does the Treasury try to take the fact that Chrysler has failed to repay its loans as something positive, they have also decided that almost two billion dollars is not worth trying to recoup.  I think the Treasury Department and I have a very different idea of what success is.

National Science Foundation Spends Billions for Studies on Farmville, March Madness & Rap Songs

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – U.S. Senator Tom Coburn, M.D. (R-OK) today released a new oversight report, “The National Science Foundation: Under the Microscope” that raises serious questions regarding the agency’s management and priorities. The report identifies more than $1.2 billion the National Science Foundation (NSF) has lost due to waste, fraud, duplication and mismanagement and an additional $1.7 billion in unspent funds.

“As a practicing physician and a two-time cancer survivor, I understand the benefits of scientific research. Investing in innovation and discovery can transform our lives, advance our understanding of the world and create new jobs. There is no question NSF serves an important –and legitimate – purpose in our society and has contributed to scientific discovery. As the NSF accurately notes, advances like the Internet, cloud computing, bar codes and magnetic resonance imaging technology were supported with investments from NSF,” Dr. Coburn said.

“Unfortunately, in some ways NSF has undermined its core mission through mismanagement and misplaced priorities. For instance, spending taxpayer dollars to study why some college basketball teams dominate March Madness, funding trips for romantically-involved NSF employees and duplicating programs contributes to our debt rather than science,” Dr. Coburn said.

“As part of my commitment to conduct better oversight on how Washington spends your money, this NSF report is the latest in a series of oversight reports. At a time when the U.S. is being both challenged as the world's scientific and technological leader and threatened by a nearly insurmountable $14 trillion debt, we must learn to do more with less. This report demonstrates how NSF can do both. I hope NSF and the scientific community will welcome this oversight and offer insights on how to better prioritize our nation’s limited financial resources to advance science and reduce wasteful spending,” Dr. Coburn said.

Examples of the more than $3 billion in waste and duplication outlined in the report include:

• $80,000 study on why the same teams always dominate March Madness;
• $315,000 study suggesting playing FarmVille on Facebook helps adults develop and maintain relationships;
• $1 million for an analysis of how quickly parents respond to trendy baby names;
• $50,000 to produce and publicize amateur songs about science, including a rap called “Money 4 Drugz,” and a misleading song titled “Biogas is a Gas, Gas, Gas”;
• $2 million to figure out that people who often post pictures on the internet from the same location at the same time are usually friends; and
• $581,000 on whether online dating site users are racist.

Additionally, the report details examples of mismanagement including:

• Hundreds of millions of dollars lost to ineffective contracting;
• $1.7 billion in unspent funds sitting in expired, undisbursed grant accounts;
• At least $3 million in excessive travel funds
• A lack of accountability or program metrics to evaluate expenditures.
• Inappropriate staff behavior including porn surfing and Jello wrestling and skinny-dipping at NSF-operated facilities in Antarctica.

The report also identifies duplication between NSF and other departments and agencies. NSF is one of at least 15 federal departments, 72 sub-agencies, and 12 independent agencies engaged in federal research and development.

NSF also duplicates the work of the Department of Education and other government agencies in the area of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education. In 2010, there were 28 STEM education programs at NSF totaling $1.2 billion. Across the federal government, there are 99 STEM education programs totaling $3 billion.

Finally, the report makes a number of recommendations:

• Establish Clear Guidelines for What Constitutes “Transformative” and “Potentially Transformative” Science. The agency has begun this process, but much more needs to be done to evaluate the merit of each project funded by the agency.
• Set Clear Metrics to Measure Success and Standards to Ensure Accountability. The agency clearly needs to improve its grant administration and evaluation mechanisms. Addressing these areas will help set better priorities while also rooting out fraudulent and inappropriate expenditures.
• Eliminate NSF’s Social, Behavioral, and Economics (SBE) Directorate ($255 million in FY 2010). The social sciences should not be the focus of our premier basic scientific research agency.
• Consolidate the Directorate for Education & Human Resources ($872 million in FY 2010). In addition to excessive duplication within the agency and across the federal government, spending on education and human resources comes at the expense of actual scientific pursuits. Consolidation can lead to increased investment in transformative scientific studies.
• Use It or Lose It: NSF Should Better Manage Resources It Can No Longer Spend or Does Not Need and Immediately Return $1.7 Billion of Unspent, Expired Funds It Currently Holds. Better grant management and closeout procedures could increase available funds for research and provide savings for the federal government.
• Reduce Duplication: Develop a Strategic Plan to Streamline Federal Research and Development. With so many agencies performing research and development, the White House Office of Science and Technology should develop a strategic plan to better coordinate research and development efforts and make specific recommendations to eliminate duplication.
• Provide the NSF Inspector General Additional Resources and Place a Greater Emphasis on the Office of Inspector General’s Findings. Reducing outright fraud and inappropriate expenditures is an important priority.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – May 17, 2011 – We the People Convention, Inc., a 501 (c) 4 non-profit organization today announced that the Tea Party Patriots have signed on as a sponsor of the statewide “We the People Convention” and that Jenny Beth Martin , nationally known speaker and co-founder of the Tea Party Patriots, will be the featured guest speaker at the Friday luncheon on July 1, 2011.  The Tea Party Patriots is a national grassroots coalition with more than 3,300 locally organized chapters and more than 15 million supporters nationwide. After hearing CNBC commentator Rick Santelli challenge Chicago to a 1773, Boston-style response to the country’s expanding, fiscally irresponsible government, Martin, along with several others, orchestrated the first round of tea parties on February 27. After which, she helped coordinate a nationwide April 15 rally to coincide with Tax Day, resulting in more than 850 TEA parties across the country with over 1.2 million people gathering to advocate government fiscal responsibility.

Additionally, Martin helped organize and lead the September 12, 2009 protest in Washington and is remembered for her comments directed at the legislators, “We were not loud enough in February, in April, in July. Can you hear us now?”

In April 2010, Time magazine named Martin one of the most influential people in the world. She has been featured on “The Glenn Beck Show” and “Your World” with Neil Cavuto as well as in various publications, including The New York Times.

The “We the People Convention” consists of two days of educational breakout sessions, interspersed with major national figures including conservative strategist Dick Morris. Its purpose is to educate and train citizens about the political process and to encourage involvement in that process at the grassroots level.
