"Voterless" elections

Okay, Ann Coulter is a bomb-thrower, but she also can hit the nail squarely on the head. Her column the other day was about the “voterless” primary elections, in which GOPe “leaders” are giving delegates to candidates whether the electorate likes it or not. Wisconsin. Colorado. Wyoming. Is West Virginia next? Here are extracts from her column

Another misconception sweeping the nation is that when state Republican parties disregard the voters and give all their delegates to Cruz, they are merely following THE RULES, and Trump is an idiot for not knowing THE RULES. 

That's what the Colorado GOP did, what the Tennessee and Louisiana parties are trying to do -- and what many other states may do, all under the careful tutelage of Tracy Flick Cruz.

I keep asking someone to send me a copy of THE RULES that direct state parties to ignore the voters and pick their own slate of delegates, but no one can cite such a rule. So I read through "The Rules of the Republican Party" myself -- and guess what? There's no rule instructing state parties to ignore the voters! 

To the contrary, the rules were recently rewritten so that delegate selection would "reflect the results of statewide presidential preference elections," according to a statement by Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus. (The nerds will tell us, that's "legislative history," not THE RULES.) 

Apparently, what people mean by THE RULES is that there is no RNC rule specifically prohibiting a state party from giving all the delegates to a single nominee, even if that is demonstrably at odds with the will of the voters. 

The state parties are given a lot of discretion, so Cruz harasses and cajoles the local party until it awards all the state's delegates to him. Trump keeps winning elections, and Cruz keeps winning sneaky procedural victories. 

Until Cruz won a primary in mean-as-a-snake Wisconsin, he hadn't won a single primary -- i.e., an "election" -- outside of his home state, a sister state and a state where Trump didn't campaign. In fact, until cantankerous Wisconsin, the only primary where Cruz managed to surpass 34 percent of the vote was his home state of Texas -- where he got 43.8 percent. 

(Contrary to lies you read in The New York Times, Trump has not complained about any of those races. And you know why? Because they were elections, not corrupt backroom maneuvering. Hey - does anyone know if the general election is won by influence-peddling with tiny groups of insiders or is it by winning elections?) 

It's as if Cruz and Trump are playing different sports: Trump keeps belting home runs, while Cruz is berating the umpire until he calls a balk, then prances to home base, telling everyone he hit a grand slam. 

True, there's no rule explicitly disallowing a state party from rigging the delegate selection. There's also no rule explicitly disallowing a state party from giving all its delegates to Kim Kardashian. 

Cruz is bragging about winning delegates in “voterless” elections, as the Drudge Report and other media dub them. Trump's “campaign strategy is to win with the voters. Ted Cruz’s campaign strategy is to win despite them.”

Does anyone really believe GOPe chairman Reince Priebus when he says “It's not a matter of party insiders. It's a matter of 2,400 grassroots activists, and whatever they want to do, they can do.”

TheWashington Examiner (probably the most user-UNfriendly website) reports that RNC Chairman Reince Priebus told pro-Cruz Charlie Sykes on WTMJ 620 Radio Tuesday that “the party” is choosing the nominee:

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus cautioned supporters of Donald Trump who vocally disapprove of the GOP's delegate allocation and selection process.

"By the way, this is a nomination for the Republican Party," Priebus told 620 WTMJ in Wisconsin. "If you don't like the party, then sit down. The party is choosing a nominee."

Priebus said he does not think Trump will run as a third-party candidate, and added that he expects all remaining Republican candidates to support the party's nominee.

As far as the Republican Party elite are concerned, your vote does not count.

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus is, again, shutting down rumors that Speaker Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) will emerge as a consensus candidate at the Republican convention in July, asserting on CNN’s State of the Union that this is very unlikely to happen.

“If anything like that were to happen, which I think is highly, highly unlikely, I think our candidate is someone who’s running, OK? That’s pretty obvious,” he said during an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper.

The RNC chairman, a close friend of Ryan, praised the speaker as someone who “doesn’t seek out these things” and was not interested.

“He doesn’t want to do it. And I know Paul very well,” Priebus insisted.

Ryan himself dismissed the idea during an interview with Hugh Hewitt this morning, urging his backers to stop floating his name for consideration.

If nominated, I will not run. If elected, I will not serve.

Another Self-Inflicted Wound for the GOP

Below is a great article by Emery McClendon (Tea Party Patriots State Coordinator for Indiana) on the shameful behavior of the GOP in Mississippi.....

Republican National Committeeman Henry Barbour gave black Americans a slap in the face when he orchestrated a cynical, race-baiting campaign targeting fellow Republican Chris McDaniel in the Mississippi Senate primary runoff against incumbent Sen. Thad Cochran. It was insulting to African-Americans, unfair to McDaniel, and dirty pool by any reasonable measure. But the refusal of the Republican National Committee to censure Barbour’s actions shows an astonishing tone-deafness by RNC Chairman Reince Priebus and portends continued failure by the GOP to attract black voters.

If Priebus wants to understand what’s happening in black communities and learn how to draw them closer to the GOP, I invite him to join me for a visit to Roger’s Barber Shop on Maumee Street in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where I’ve been getting my hair cut for the last quarter-century. It’s something of a landmark in the local African-American community, a hotbed of political discourse and a place where visitors are guaranteed to get an earful and an education.

What Priebus would learn at Roger’s is what black Americans actually think about politics. When many blacks hear of a candidate or party that wants to “prevent you from voting,” or eliminate particular social programs – as happened in Mississippi – a red flag goes up in their minds, reviving images of the civil rights era of the 1960s. It even happens among younger blacks who did not witness the tyranny of Bull Connor and George Wallace (both of whom were staunch Democrats) but learned the stories from their elders.

For many black Americans, there is an almost reflexive opposition to the GOP that surfaces any time there’s an accusation of racial bias by Republicans, a message Democrats have pounded on for decades. So when Republicans go out of their way to reinforce the lies told about their party, it plays right into the hands of liberals. Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz must be doing cartwheels for joy because of Henry Barbour’s actions.

Regardless of where they live, a lot of blacks don’t see Barbour’s racially incendiary campaign as an isolated, parochial incident. Instead, it is seen as validating the false narrative promoted by Democrats about Republicans, making it a lot tougher for black conservatives like me to explain and defend conservative principles among other blacks.

As one of the original members of the Tea Party, I have worked with hundreds of black community leaders across my home state since 2009, trying to educate and engage them on the critical issues confronting our nation and how Tea Party Patriots has proven, principled policies to tackle those issues.

But when we start getting a little traction, the Republican establishment pulls a stunt like we saw in Mississippi and we wind up losing momentum. The folly of Barbour’s antics is compounded when Priebus and other RNC members refuse to even entertain a motion censuring Barbour, indicating that what he did was just fine. Small wonder that some refer to the GOP as The Stupid Party.

There are vast numbers of African Americans who are willing to stand up against the Jesse Jacksons and Al Sharptons of the world and acknowledge that they do not speak for all black Americans. They are looking for political inspiration, and with black unemployment more than double the jobless rate of whites, many are dissatisfied with Democrat policies, providing a tremendous opportunity to advance conservative principles.

Instead, the opportunity is wasted because the chairman of the Republican Party would rather promote the falsehoods of the opposition than discipline a fellow member of the RNC. The only thing new about Barbour’s tactics is that they were set in motion by a Republican who simply borrowed a few pages from the Democrat playbook. But whether Barbour realizes it or not, his efforts smeared more than McDaniel; they smeared the entire Republican Party.

Republicans will fail to attract more blacks to their party as long as they abide by the cheap politics of race hustling and refuse to hear what the community is saying. Whether it’s in Roger’s Barber Shop or any of the thousands of others across America, Republicans need to start listening to what’s being said instead of administering more self-inflicted wounds.

Allowing the GOP establishment to race-bait and smear a fellow Republican, an elected official mind you, to gin up Democrat voters to sabotage a Republican primary and disenfranchise a majority of conservative voters is beyond reprehensible.
