Stop the Amnesty bill. Again.

NumbersUSA sent out an alert (and I’ve cut out the sections asking for contributions); should you want to explore their website, click here.  Here's an edited message:

House Passes Amnesty for More than One Million Illegal Aliens

The House of Representatives last week passed a massive, new amnesty for well over a million illegal aliens. That's bad news, no matter how you spin it. But there is some good news: Our members and allies made enough of an uproar about it that we minimized Republican support for the bill. We may have changed Republican leaders' minds about passing it.

We're not surprised we couldn't outright defeat the bill in the Democrat-controlled House. And It had been shocking to see dozens of Republicans falling over themselves to support this bill. Some people thought up to HALF of House Republicans -- maybe even Donald Trump -- would support the bill. The following quote was typical of a certain kind of Republican Representative:
"This [Ag Jobs bill] is exactly the kind of 'merit-based' immigration reform President Trump has been calling for.
"I spoke directly with President Trump about the Farm Workforce Modernization Act and the need for a solution for our farmers. He agreed: We must provide relief now."
-- U.S. Rep. Dan Newhouse, Yakima Herald, Dec 8, 2019
. . .
[NumbersUSA supporters] clobbered the Washington phone lines, and just about everyone who hadn't already voiced support for the bill backed away, Republican leaders "whipped" their members for "no" votes, and even a few co-sponsors changed their minds.

I want to be clear what just happened here: We've sapped much of the energy out of Republican supporters of this amnesty. But while NumbersUSA and its members threw a punch, it was NOT a knock-out blow for this bill. It may take another huge round of activism to finally put this bill to rest.

We made headlines that this is an amnesty... and THAT was crucial.
. . .
We have strong hopes that this bill will not be brought up for a vote if we push hard enough against it. But your Senators need to hear from you. . .

Update on HB 512 and Alert

Second Hearing for Opposition Testimony
This Week ~ Wednesday, March 14 @ 9:30am

Cleveland Tea Party blogged on March 4 about HB 512 – the state’s education power-grab – click here. A short overview is at The Petition Site hereToday’s Alert is based on e-Alerts from other Ohio liberty groups.

Reasons to oppose HB 512:
  • ·         Would establish the largest educational bureaucracy in the nation
  • ·         Would take away the right of citizens to effectively have a say in education and concentrate power in the hands of the Governor. HB 512 will further weaken local control of schools.
  • ·         An unresponsive education bureaucracy would lead to more rule making authority, and allow the state government to act unilaterally -- without a check and balance by an elected Board of Education, as specified by law.
  • ·         With today’s need for education to focus more on skilled trades and non-college jobs, a department with a K-16 focus can only make education more expensive and more difficult to prepare students for future employment and careers.

If you were unable to travel to Columbus last week, here’s a second opportunity to attend the hearing on HB 512 on Wednesday, March 14th.  Come for as long as you can, depending on the amount of testimony for each bill (there are seven prior to HB512).
The hearing room was moved to 313 - the largest available so we will need more people to attend.

Additional Action Alerts:
Continue to both call and write to your state representative.

Submit "written only" testimony to  GovernmentAccountability&OversightCommittee@ohiohouse.gov

Offer written and oral testimony (be prepared for questions from Committee Members) by sending prepared remarks to the e-mail address above 24 hours in advance of the hearing and completing a witness slip as requested through the chairman's office.

Attend the hearing to quietly demonstrate your opposition to the massive overhaul of Ohio's education system, consolidation of power under the governor and elimination of voter's voice in education policy!

Note: HB 512 is listed on the March 14 schedule as being for proponent, opponent, and interested parties. It is common practice that by inviting all parties to testify, this could indicate it is the final hearing... although this is at Chairman Blessing's discretion.

Additional Information:

Note that the agenda specifies that this will also include hearings on other pending legislation.  HB512 is listed as being for proponent, opponent, and interested parties (these are usually neutral). It is common practice that by inviting all parties to testify, this could indicate it is the final hearing....although this is at Chairman Blessing's discretion.

Additional Information about this bill:
Here is the 28-minute House Press Conference on Feb. 14.
Here is the HB 512 Bill Summary.
Here is the 2,430 page bill location and its status. (You can download current version.)

The State Board of Education, which includes 11 regionally elected members, would no longer have any voice in state education policy.  This includes a wide range of state regulations, such as:

- Education Standards in all subjects
- Education Assessment selection at the state level
- Determination of Achievement/Proficiency Levels
- State Report Cards
- Teacher/Student Ratio's
- Private School Regulations
- Religious School Regulations
- Home Education Regulations
- Public School Operating Standards
- Career Technical Regulations

Currently all of these items (and many more) go through a public hearing process.  Under the proposed legislation, it appears that all policy making function would be further bureaucratized and no longer created through a transparent, accountable process.

This legislation also imposes on our Constitutional separation of powers by giving the administrative branch (Governor) legislative authority.  Our founders knew that people are more likely to lose their rights when the same body is creating and enforcing the laws.  HB512 aligns all education entities solely under the administrative branch and gives the new mega-agency the ability to create and enforce regulations with no accountability.

This needs to be stopped.  This would eliminate any effective representation that we have through the State School Board, Board of Regents, etc.  This is a full-on power grab by Kasich.
* * *
Related: Last week, cleveland.com reported on Gov. Kasich’s dismantling of the Ohio Board of Regents:

The Ohio Board of Regents, an advisory board to the Ohio Department of Higher Education, has not met in more than a year because it currently has only two members, three members shy of a quorum.

Gov. John Kasich, who is responsible for appointments to the nine-member board, has not replaced members whose terms have expired for at least five years.

Kasich supports a bill [that would be HB 512] recently introduced in the Ohio House to combine the state's school, university and workforce development systems into a single new Department of Learning and Achievement.

Amnesty vote in Congress ~ Alert!

UPDATE: 5:53pm (posted at 6:37 pm) from NumbersUSA media release:
NumbersUSA and its 9 million activists are pleased that the Senate rejected all three amnesty proposals that came to the floor today for a vote. Every proposal under consideration put the interests of illegal aliens and foreign citizens ahead of the interests of American workers, American communities, and national security. Americans can not afford for Congress to grant amnesty without immediately ending Chain Migration and the Visa Lottery and mandating E-Verify.

UPDATE: 4:32 pm from The Hill:
The Senate has rejected legislation based on President Trump's framework for an immigration deal in a 39-60 vote on Thursday, leaving an uncertain path forward for Congress with nearly a million immigrants sheltered by an Obama-era program face the prospect of deportation.

The measure spearheaded by Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) needed 60 votes to clear a filibuster, but failed to meet the mark.

It was the fourth proposal in a row rejected by the Senate on Thursday afternoon, and it received the fewest votes of support. All three other measures won more than 50 votes.

UPDATE 3:10 pm from The Hill:

Senate rejects first bipartisan measure as immigration votes begin
The Senate has rejected an immigration measure sponsored by Sens. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Christopher Coons (D-Del.) that did not include money for President Trump’s border wall.

The proposal is the first of four that the Senate will vote on Thursday, though each appears short of the 60 votes needed to overcome a filibuster.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
This Action Alert is from NumbersUSA [emphasis color in original]:
As [of] noon on Thursday, the Senate is considering not only granting amnesty to every illegal immigrant already in the country, but to any illegal immigrants who can get here by June!

Could anything express more contempt for American voters than this? Incredibly, this bill is rumored to have 65 supporters in the Senate; it already has EIGHT Republican co-sponsors!

The Senate is debating immigration proposals all day TODAY and through the end of this week. So far, it looks to be one horrible bill after the other. (One exception would be the amendment from Pennsylvania's Sen. Toomey, which directs actions against sanctuary cities.)

KEEP CHECKING YOUR EMAIL FOR ACTION ALERTS -- THE SITUATION IS CHANGING HOURLY! [NOTE: Or check this website for Updates.]

Our best hope may be that the Senate defeats ALL its current proposals. Then, if that happens, we will press hard to have the House take up the Goodlatte bill, H.R. 4760, that we've endorsed.
. . .
There is GOOD news on the House side. We've learned that House Republican leaders are doing a "whip count" on the Goodlatte bill. This is such great news, because this is the NumbersUSA-endorsed bill that mandates E-Verify for every employer, cancels chain migration, and eliminates the visa lottery.

A whip count means they will be more likely to bring the bill up for a vote if it seems to have enough support to pass. So, obviously we're now pouring lots more resources into the House fight as well as our Senate efforts.

. . . None of the Senate measures would prevent pressure for future amnesties by requiring all employers to use E-Verify or reduce the size of the amnesty by ending Chain Migration in the near term. Mandatory E-Verify and an immediate end to Chain Migration must be part of any DACA deal!

1) The Schumer-Collins-Rounds-King Proposal -- This is biggest threat, an amnesty to EVERY ILLEGAL ALIEN IN AMERICA, INCLUDING ALL THOSE WHO CAN SNEAK IN BY JUNE 30, while it guts interior enforcement! And it may actually have the most support.

2) The White House Proposal -- Sens. Chuck Grassley and John Cornyn have drafted legislation that reflects the White House DACA proposal. It would expand DACA to grant an immediate amnesty to approximately 1.8 million illegal aliens. It calls for a $25 billion trust fund to build the border wall and improve overall border security. It would eliminate the Visa Lottery and halt new applications for Chain Migration, but it uses those supposedly eliminated visas to bring in the backlog of more than 4 million foreigners, which could take 15-20 years.

3) Senators John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Chris Coons (D-Del.) propose granting amnesty to 3.2 million illegal aliens without any concrete steps to reduce immigration or improve enforcement at all.

One piece of good news is that the White House publicly rejected the McCain-Coons approach yesterday.

It's hard to see how most of these bills are a "compromise." . . .

Tell Your Congressman - Just Say NO to Paul Ryan!

This Thursday, October 15 at noon, we are asking every Tea Party Patriots supporter to visit the local office or call the Republican Congressmen from your state to tell them to choose our next Speaker wisely.

Right now, the talking heads in DC, the establishment Republicans - including outgoing Speaker John Boehner, and even one of the most liberal Democrats - Congressman Luis "Amnesty" Gutierrez are trying to have Congressman Paul Ryan coronated as the next Speaker of the House.

Congressman Ryan has often been viewed as a conservative by the mainstream media, but his record doesn't reflect our definition of conservative. Jenny Beth Martin released a statement yesterday where she laid this out.
“Specifically, his support for No Child Left Behind, the largest expansion of the federal government since Lyndon Johnson’s ‘Great Society’ – that is, Medicare Part D, the Prescription Drug bill – the bailouts, the debt ceiling, and his support of the Gang of 8 amnesty bill demonstrate that Ryan is no different than John Boehner and Kevin McCarthy, whom grassroots conservatives and the GOP conference have already rejected."
We must do everything we can to:
  1. Encourage the House Freedom Caucus and other Conservatives in the House to continue to stick together and stand on principles rather than a personality. Paul Ryan is a personality who is being hand-picked by John Boehner.
  2. Ensure the next Speaker is committed to serious reforms in the House that will decentralize the current top-down structure and allow all Members an opportunity to represent their constituents in the legislative process - Daniel Webster of Florida is the only person who has laid out such a vision and he actually implemented it as Speaker of the House in Florida.
Please plan to visit or call GOP Congressman from your state this Thursday at noon local time.

We've tried to make it as easy as possible for you to make it this Thursday. Simply visit the site, navigate the map to the nearest GOP Congressional Office, click the flag on the map to RSVP. We are working on a toolkit that will be added to the site later today and we will send you an email if you RSVP before the toolkit is finalized. The toolkit will include the following:
  • Sample Letter to the Congressman
  • A guide on visiting your Congressman
  • Sample Tweets
  • Talking points
We are coming off of two huge victories. John Boehner's top-down approach to the House of Representatives and his complete denial to listen to the American people is what ultimately forced him out. Kevin McCarthy's close proximity to Boehner made him a place holder for Boehner, which ultimately forced him out. We have an opportunity here to have an impact on who the next Speaker is and what their agenda will be. Please visit your GOP Congressman this Thursday and tell them to choose our next Speaker wisely. It's time to return the House of Representatives to truly represent the will of the people.

Keep Up the Fight to Stop the Iran Deal!

The Stop the Iran Deal Rally a huge success! We had a wonderful turnout. Your donations and hard work made this event possible, and we cannot thank you enough!

If you were unable to make the event, here is a link to watch the whole event on line - click here.

Now is the time to increase the pressure and build on the momentum of yesterday’s event.  Today we need you to make 4 calls to Congress and turn up the pressure on social media.

1. Call Senator Lindsey Graham at 202.224.5972 and also contact him via Facebook & Twitter.

Thank Sen. Graham for acknowledging that the Corker-Cardin Iran Nuclear Agreement Approval Act is not being followed, and ask him to encourage Senate Republican Leadership to stand up to President Obama. President Obama wants to rush this process, but the clock has not started ticking yet. It is up to the GOP leadership to put the brakes on this!

2. Call Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell at 202.224.2541 & contact him via Facebook & Twitter.

Tell Sen. McConnell that the Corker-Cardin Iran Nuclear Agreement Approval Act is not being followed and demand that the Senate stand up to President Obama. The Senate must tell President Obama that the clock has not yet started ticking because the President has not given all the side deals to Congress. Americans overwhelmingly oppose this deal (60% of Americans want it stopped). The risks of not standing up are too great. Iran will be able to fund even more terrorist activities once the sanctioned money (billions of dollars!) is released to Iran.

3. Call Senator Bob Corker at 202.224.3344 and also contact him via Facebook and Twitter.

The message for Sen. Corker is the same as the message for Sen. McConnell (above).

4. Call your congressman (click here) and also tweet and comment on Facebook.

Ask your congressman to vote yes on Pompeo-Zeldin resolution, to vote no on approving the Iran Deal, and to vote yes to prohibit President Obama from lifting the sanctioned money.

Thank you again for your support for yesterday's rally. And thank you for making these calls today. It is impossible for us to convey just how important these calls are, and they really do make a difference! We regularly hear from Congressional offices that their phones were ringing off the hook because of Tea Party Patriots’ calls.

Let’s make sure they hear from us today!

Action Alert: Time to Defund Illegal Sanctuary Cities!

Action Alert

In response to the senseless killing of Kate Steinle by an illegal immigrant who was a convicted felon and had been previously deported numerous times, Congressmen Lou Barletta (R-PA) introduced the Mobilizing Against Sanctuary Cities Act....

The Mobilizing Against Sanctuary Cities Act (HR 3002) prohibits any federal funding for a minimum period of one year to any state or local government which has a policy or law that prevents them from assisting immigration authorities in enforcing federal immigration law.

The Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE) lists more than 200 such localities in the United States. Barletta’s bill directs the attorney general to compile an annual list of such cities and issue a report on any particular state or locality upon request from a member of Congress.

A state or local government would only regain federal funding eligibility after the attorney general certifies that its laws and policies are in compliance with federal immigration statutes. (Read More)
These havens for illegal immigrants, better known as "Sanctuary Cities," operate in defiance of federal immigration laws, ignoring those laws as though they did not exist. In the case of Kate Steinle, the illegal immigrant charged in her slaying, readily admits that he continued returning to the US after being deported because he knew San Francisco was a "'Sanctuary City' and he would not be pursued." (Click here for video)

It is difficult to put an exact number on the total Sanctuary Cities and/or cities with sympathetic policies, but the number exceeds 200. In Ohio alone, there are at least 6 designated Sanctuary Cities (Columbus, Dayton, Lima, Lorain, Oberlin, and Painesville), with many other municipalities moving in that direction.

Please call your Congressman and tell them to put the well-being & safety of US citizens over the funding of cities that defy federal law & protect illegal immigrants by supporting Rep Barletta's Mobilizing Against Sanctuary Cities Act.

Below is a list of GOP Congressmen from Ohio.
