Don Surber's tribute to Phyllis Schlafly

Phyllis Schlafly lived

Don Surber’s blog columns are often accessible via some of the aggregators. His column yesterday (via Lucianne.com) was a tribute to Phyllis Schlafly, who passed away over the Labor Day weekend. While many Tea Party people will be aware that Mrs. Schlafly’s organization Eagle Forum was recently challenged with a hostile takeover by a faction led, sadly, by her daughter, Surber’s tribute is entirely about Mrs. Schlafly’s courage and effectiveness as a champion of conservative principles. Here's some of his blog column:

The Labor Day death of Phyllis Schlafly at 92 brought out the trolls among the left who called her names. Her death matters less than her life. She kept pushing for an unvarnished and unapologetic conservatism, as championed by Ronald Reagan and Donald Trump.

World Net Daily published her last column a few hours ago. [It’s also up on Eagle Forum here.]

Donald Trump’s surprise visit to Mexico, where he met the Mexican president and discussed the many contentious issues between our two countries, reminds me of President Reagan’s important trip to Geneva in 1985. Reagan was more than willing to sit down with the Communist leader of the USSR in an effort to build a personal connection between the two men without sacrificing America’s vital interests in the Cold War.

The 1985 Geneva summit was highly advertised as a potential showdown between Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev, the supposedly reasonable new Soviet leader. When it was over, Americans realized that behind Reagan’s genial affability was a steely determination to protect our country against the threat from Soviet nuclear missiles.

Just as today’s mainstream media are bent on undermining Trump’s call to put Americans first in our dealings with Mexico, the media of the 1980s (led by ABC’s Sam Donaldson and CBS’ Dan Rather) were overwhelmingly pro-Gorbachev and anti-Reagan in their daily coverage.

Her column is a reminder that we are on the right course, and we should remain true. The critics who hate America -- its self-reliance, its upward mobility, its sheer majesty -- never change. Only our heroes do.

"And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest!" (Hamlet, V.2)
The Eagle Forum website seems to be down; I'll update this blog ASAP.

Update Sept-06: Eagle Forum posted this on their website:
Today, Phyllis Schlafly passed away in the presence of her family at her home in St. Louis, Missouri.
An iconic American leader whose love for America was surpassed only by her love of God and her family, Phyllis Schlafly, an indomitable pro-family grassroots advocate and organizer, was 92 years old. Mrs. Schlafly was preceded in death by her beloved husband Fred and is survived by six children along with 16 grand and 3 great grandchildren.
Phyllis Schlafly spent an astounding 70 years in public service of her fellow Americans. Her focus from her earliest days until her final ones was protecting the family, which she understood as the building block of life. She recognized America as the greatest political embodiment of those values. From military superiority and defense to immigration and trade; from unborn life to the nuclear family and parenthood, Phyllis Schlafly was a courageous and articulate voice for common sense and traditional values. She authored 27 books and thousands of articles. She spoke tens of thousands of times across the United States.
Her joy in life was evident to all through her smile and wit. Funeral arrangements are pending.

Update Sept-06: DONALD J. TRUMP STATEMENT ON PHYLLIS SCHLAFLY
“Phyllis Schlafly is a conservative icon who led millions to action, reshaped the conservative movement, and fearlessly battled globalism and the ‘kingmakers’ on behalf of America’s workers and families. I was honored to spend time with her during this campaign as she waged one more great battle for national sovereignty. I was able to speak with her by phone only a few weeks ago, and she sounded as resilient as ever. Our deepest prayers go out to her family and all her loved ones. She was a patriot, a champion for women, and a symbol of strength. She fought every day right to the end for America First. Her legacy will live on in the movement she led and the millions she inspired.” – Donald J. Trump

This just in: News release from Eagle Forum (h/t conservative treehouse):

Phyllis Schlafly Elected as National Delegate at Missouri Convention

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: May 21, 2016
CONTACT: Ryan Hite, Communications Director O 314.721.1213 /Ryan@EagleForum.org

Branson, MO: Today at the Missouri Republican State Convention in Branson, Phyllis Schlafly, founder and chairman of Eagle Forum, was elected as a national delegate to the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, Ohio. Phyllis has participated in every convention since 1952.

“Politics is where the action is and the Republican Party is where we can make a difference. I am proud to be a Republican and attend our Conventions,” Schlafly said. “I look forward to joining other conservatives in Cleveland to pass our solid, conservative platform that includes a strong defense of the unborn, traditional marriage, and the American military superiority that has given us ‘peace through strength.’
. . .

“In Cleveland, I will proudly cast my vote for the next President of the United States of America, Mr. Donald J. Trump.”

Good to see Ms. Schlafly is still chairman of Eagle Forum, after the recent attempted coup.

Ted Cruz Supporters Attempt Coup At Eagle Forum

conservativefifty.com

It just keeps coming. This report is via Gateway Pundit:

Cruz Supporters Stage Coup –
Try to Dump Phyllis Schlafly After Trump Endorsement

Conservative icon Phyllis Schlafly has been a national leader of the conservative movement since the publication of her best-selling 1964 book, A Choice Not An Echo. She has been a leader of the pro-family movement since 1972 when she led the fight to defeat the Equal Rights Amendment.
Phyllis Schlafly is 91 years-old.

On March 11, 2016 conservative icon Phyllis Schlafly endorsed Donald Trump for President at his St. Louis rally.

But not everyone in her organization, Eagle Forum – or her family – agreed with Phyllis Schlafly’s decision.

Last week Phyllis Schlafly released several board members for disloyalty to the organization.
The group was planning to hold rogue board meeting to take over the Eagle Forum.
Today the rogue Cruz supporters attempted a coup.

They held a non-sanctioned meeting and blocked Phyllis Schlafly from their conference call.
This email was sent out Monday afternoon.

St. Louis, Missouri:
“At 2pm today, 6 directors of Eagle Forum met in an improper, unprecedented telephone meeting. I objected to the meeting and at 2:11pm, I was muted from the call. The meeting was invalid under the Bylaws but the attendees purported to pass several motions to wrest control of the organization from me. They are attempting to seize access to our bank accounts, to terminate employees, and to install members of their own Gang of 6 to control the bank accounts and all of Eagle Forum.

“The members of their group are: Eunie Smith of Alabama, Anne Cori of Missouri, Cathie Adams of Texas, Rosina Kovar of Colorado, Shirley Curry of Tennessee, and Carolyn McLarty of Oklahoma.

“This kind of conduct will not stand and I will fight for Eagle Forum and I ask all men and women of good will to join me in this fight.”
