While some groups in Ohio are more concerned about getting a 'seat at the table' and the subsequent pat on the head for being good little GOP 'tools' and not messing up the place settings, some of you and the true grassroots Tea party groups are out there doing the hard work and kicking the table to get things done.

Because of your repeated phone calls, emails and faxes over the last two months to the office of Senator Portman (R-OH) voicing your opposition to the United Nations Law of the Sea Treaty (LOST), Senator Portman and Senator Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) have notified Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid they will be joining the 32 other Senators in opposition to LOST, which would effectively give ownership of the oceans to the United Nations.

Senators Portman and Ayotte Sink Law Of The Sea Treaty

Two Senate Armed Services Committee Members Announce Opposition In Letter To Majority Leader Harry Reid, Saying "No International Organization Owns The Seas"

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senators Rob Portman (R-Ohio), ranking member on the Emerging Threats and Capabilities Subcommittee, and Kelly Ayotte (R-NH), ranking member of the Subcommittee on Readiness and Management Support, sent a letter today to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid in which they announced their opposition to Senate ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Citing significant concerns about the breadth and ambiguity of the treaty, and more importantly, the risks to U.S. sovereignty due to issues regarding enforcement and adjudication, the two members of the Senate Armed Services Committee stated, “After careful consideration, we have concluded that on balance this treaty is not in the national interest of the United States.   As a result, we would oppose the treaty if it were called up for a vote.”

Portman and Ayotte continued, “We simply are not persuaded that decisions by the International Seabed Authority and international tribunals empowered by this treaty will be more favorable to U.S. interests than bilateral negotiations, voluntary arbitration, and other traditional means of resolving maritime issues.  No international organization owns the seas, and we are confident that our country will continue to protect its navigational freedom, valid territorial claims, and other maritime rights.”

Because the Constitution requires 67 affirmative votes for the Senate to ratify a treaty, and 31 senators have previously signed a letter in opposition and a 32^nd senator announced his opposition, Portman and Ayotte’s announcement makes efforts to ratify the Law of the Sea Treaty dead in the water in this Congress.

Two more Republican Senators have signed the letter opposing LOST bringing the total to 30 (four votes shy of being doomed), but Senator Portman is not one of them.

This treaty, as well as all others with the UN, must be defeated! The push for a one world globalist government must be stopped!

Take Action!

Contact Senator Portman and ask him why he refuses to sign the letter opposing LOST. And while you're at it, ask him why he also did not join the other 12 Senators in signing the letter asking governors to oppose the creation of state health care exchanges, which are a method of implementing Obamatax (Obamacare).

Law of the Sea Treaty

Ohio - May 31, 2012.  In 1982 President Ronald Reagan refused to sign a treaty known as the Law of the Sea (LOST).  This United Nations convention would raid America's wealth and redistribute it to the rest of the world through an international bureaucracy headquartered in Kingston, Jamaica. The Obama Administration, with the help of Senator John Kerry (D-MA), has revived this treaty and is holding hearings designed to illustrate its supposed benefits and generate support for its ratification. Senator Rob Portman is "Lost" on LOST

Below you will find that Senator Jim Inhofe has submitted a letter to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid in opposition to the United Nations Conventions on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), also known as the Law of the Sea Treaty (LOST).

In our first contact with Ohio Senator Rob Portman, we were informed Senator Portman was against LOST.  When contacting Portman's office the following day to ask him to sign onto in support of Senator Inhofe's below letter - the subsequent response from his office - epitomizes the response of an elected elite legislator that needs to be replaced in his next election.

Again, as he did in supporting Richard Cordray's appointment as Consumer Czar, Portman takes a spineless, fence-sitting stance claiming he still has "issues & concerns" with LOST, is still researching it, has not yet taken a position, and refused to sign onto Inhofe's below letter against LOST....

We understand that Chairman Kerry has renewed his efforts to pursue Senate ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.  We are writing to let you know that we believe this Convention reflects political, economic, and ideological assumptions which are inconsistent with American values and sovereignty.

By its current terms, the Law of the Sea Convention encompasses economic and technology interests in the deep sea, redistribution of wealth from developed to undeveloped nations, freedom of navigation in the deep sea and exclusive economic zones which may impact maritime security and environmental regulation over virtually all sources of pollution.

To affect the treaty’s broad regime of governance, we are particularly concerned that United States sovereignty could be subjugated in many areas to a supranational government that is chartered by the United Nations under the 1982 Convention.

Further, we are troubled that compulsory dispute resolution could pertain to public and private activities including law enforcement, maritime security, business operations, and nonmilitary activities performed aboard military vessels.

If this treaty comes to the floor, we will oppose its ratification.

Stop the Law of the Sea Treaty

This just in from Mansfield Tea Party Patriots:

In 1982, President Ronald Reagan refused to sign a treaty known as "Law of the Sea" (LOST), a UN convention that would raid America's treasury for billions of dollars, then redistribute that wealth to the rest of the world by an international bureaucracy headquartered in Kingston, Jamaica.

The Obama administration has revived this treaty and this week, possibly tomorrow [Weds., May 23], Senator John Kerry will be holding hearings to discuss the "benefits" and support for ratification of this treaty.

This treaty is yet another tool being used to implement the UN's Agenda 21 through the redistribution of wealth, our wealth, and it must be stopped!
